Read all about this tool and how to build one here.ĭrive stakes in along the contour line every 2-6 feet. A low-tech gadget called an A-frame level can help identify contours. When building terraces, find the contour line to keep the rainwater on the plate (terrace) so it can slowly sink in. However, if one edge dips to the side (changes elevation), the water runs off. When the edges of the plate are level (all on the same elevation contour), the water stays on the plate. Imagine a flat dinner plate with a tablespoon of water on it. ![]() #1: Drive stakes along an elevation contour line.Ĭontour lines are those that you see on an elevation map. In this method, logs and brush are laid across the hillside like a beaver dam and held in place with wooden stakes. I had no idea what check logs were, but I found more information in Edible Forest Gardens as well as in Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond, where they are referred to as check dams. I sought council from local permaculture practitioners, who suggested that I look into the concept of check logs. Oh, and the solution needed to be cheap and low tech, because after all, we’re just a volunteer group operating on a small budget. We were looking for a garden terrace solution that not only helped stabilize the hillside, but also helped increase fertility (to make up for all that had washed away). Any topsoil and nutrients that may have been there at one time had since washed away. The hillside was prone to land-sliding and erosion. In 2011, I started Hillside Community Garden, and as the name implies, we had a steep challenge. It will depend on the steepness of the hill and your car.Are you challenged with sloping land? Here’s a solution to stop erosion on a hillside and create an easily-navigable terrace garden. Is it clear? If it is, use as much or as little accelerator as you need to move at a safe speed.Indicate right (if you’re pulling out from the kerb), check your mirrors and look over your shoulder.Gently release the handbrake or parking brake. It’s still a hill start however, and there are some specific steps to follow: Hill starts are easier when facing downhill than uphill, as gravity is working with you. Just move your foot straight from the footbrake to the accelerator. If you’re driving one of these cars you don’t have to worry about using the handbrake. Some modern automatic cars have a button or foot-operated parking brake instead of a handbrake. This leaves your left hand free to control the handbrake as you take off. ![]() If your indicator is on the left side of the steering wheel, indicate before you use the handbrake. On many automatics the car will hold position while you move your foot from the brake to the accelerator. Is it clear? If it is, smoothly push down on the accelerator and pull away. When you’ve got that steady control, indicate, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder. If you start to roll back, pull up the handbrake again and use the foot pedals to find the right level of control. Push down on the accelerator a little.Hold the handbrake up so it is still engaged.Pull the handbrake up a bit and press the release button.Facing downhill this means turning the steering wheel to the left, or facing uphill to the right. Angle your front wheels towards the kerb.On really steep hills you may need to use a lower gear (‘L’, ‘1’ or ‘2’ on older automatic gear shifts). You’ll need to brake sooner and harder than you would on the flat when you want to come to a stop. You’ll need to use more accelerator to keep at a constant speed than you would when driving on the flat.
